Doomsday - the post-apocalyptic horror/thriller - is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on July 28. To celebrate, Beer.com is dedicating an entire week to all things end of the world!

MAD MAX

In 1980 a little film out of Australia starring a little-known actor named Mel Gibson burst on to the scene, brining it's own brand of "dead-and-gone" to the screen. It was a bleak view of a post-societal decline, the ravaged, crumbled society of Australia had become distant and abandoned (even more-so than it is now). In this imagining of mankind's doom, an energy crisis has forced people to do whatever it takes to provide electricity, fuel, and energy for their families. Gas has become the most prized commodity in the outback. Which is ironic, considering how much driving is done through the course of the film.

The story follows Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a young member of the rag-tag-iest group of makeshift police officers the outback has ever seen. Max and his partner Goose (Steve Bisley) stumble upon a vicious biker gang beating and raping a young couple - and everything goes to hell.

Well, more to hell then, y'know, the decline of man.

Bent on revenge, the biker gang burn his partner Goose alive, and kill Max's wife and son. If a few drinks is enough to make ol' Mel go on a hate-filled rant then those bikers lit a powder keg.

Now it's Max's turn for revenge - with his faithful dog, his supercharged Pursuit Special, leather jumpsuit (in a desert - smart), and a sawed-off shotgun, Max sets out to bust some skulls.

Almost every post-apocalyptic film after Mad Max (and it's sequels, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome) has drawn from the influence of this little Australian flick. Mad Max has been parodied in cartoons like The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and more. Post Apocalyptic games like the Fallout series draws heavily on Mad Max for influence.

One might say that Mad Max is the beginning of the end of the world... movies.
